Poppy Behrens began collecting crosses 10 years ago. Given her love for crafts and vintage collectibles, she began making crosses for friends as gifts. As they became more popular she decided to offer them for sale. Her creations have now expanded to include other unique handcrafted items such as refurbished cigar boxes and other boxes embellished with crosses, vintage jewelry, and Victorian ephemera, much of which is from the late 1880s. She also makes beautiful yard art using colorful and distinctive up-cycled glassware and china.
Each piece Poppy designs is a one-of-a-kind creation made from vintage jewelry or unique pieces that she has found while scouring flea markets, swap meets, and antique stores with her husband. “There is something
magical about designing something different and unique each and every time,” she says. “Finding the right cross, jewelry, or ephemera as the centerpiece or focal point is essential. I decide on the colors and design based on that.”
Poppy sells her handcrafted pieces at local craft shows and artisan fairs. She and her husband, Bill, reside in Surprise, Arizona, at Saber Creek Ranch with their horses, Australian
Shepherds, and menagerie of other animals. She and Bill are members of the Spirit of the West Riders and have ridden in the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day for the past 6 years.
Custom creations can be special ordered. “If you have a special vintage piece of jewelry or other collectible that you would like made into a cross or box, we can do it,” she says. “Whether purchasing for yourself or as a gift I hope you will enjoy these items as much as I have enjoyed creating them.
